Ms Monopoly Feminist Board Game

Game makers, Hasbro, launched Ms Monopoly as a ploy to celebrate female empowerment. Until now has Rich Uncle Pennybags, aka Mr Monopoly, has always been the face of the game. However the new board game box plays host to an entirely new mascot.

With Mr Monopoly in the background, Ms Monopoly is portrayed holding a coffee cup with “Boss” printed across it. Unlike the traditional Monopoly game by Hasbro, the new, female empowering version of the board game encourages players to accumulate other assets.

These include WiFi, solar heating, chocolate chip cookies and more inventions that were born of women. Hasbro’s objective with this variation of its classic game is to highlight achievements by female creatives. From advancements in science to commonly used inventions, the new release highlights some of the greatest female achievements.

Despite the backlash promotions have received for the game, commenters fail to mention that the original Monopoly game was invented by female designer Lizzie Magie.

Monopoly is turning the gender pay gap upside down with a new version of the board game where women earn more than men, its creators – inspired by female trailblazers – said on Tuesday. • Ms Monopoly replaces the game's familiar mustachioed real-estate mogul on the box with his female investor niece, as players compete to collect inventions made by women, including bullet proof vests and wifi, rather than properties. • But perhaps the biggest change is that women players will get higher payouts of Monopoly money than men, said its makers Hasbro toy firm – though men can still win if they play their cards right. • "We want to recognise and celebrate the many contributions women have made to our society and continue to make on a daily basis," said Hasbro spokeswoman Jen Boswinkel. • The game will give female players a boost with a higher payout to start investing at the beginning of the game, plus a higher payout every time they pass Go, according to stockists at Walmart chain store. • It's a far cry from real life, with women working full-time in the United States last year earning 80% of what men take home on average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. • The game is intended to highlight women who have challenged the status quo, said Hasbro, adding that women held only about 10% of all patented inventions. • Hasbro marked the launch by handing out thousands of dollars to young women working on innovations including a device that helps detect lead in drinking water and an invention to detect sinkholes before they occur. • It comes after a Polish designer created an all-female version of the board game "Who's She?" with the aim of encouraging children to learn more about famous women. • Reporting: Sonia Elks/Thomson Reuters Foundation Photo: Reuters

Comments from the public

Opinions across social media regarding the game are varied. With many questioning the game’s levels of gender inequality. The rules stipulate that female players earn percentages higher than men for the same tasks. Women also start off with a higher sum of cash in the bank.

Lloyd from Yate in Gloucestershire joked “I’ll wear a skirt and a blouse to get ahead…”

Jason from Gravesend, Kent exclaimed “But why? In original monopoly, does the man get more money? I thought women wanted equality, not to get 1 up on us men.”

Omar, location unknown asked “What will happen to the iron?!”

Megan from London commented “think we should get this! 😂😂” while tagging a male friend.

Although receiving plenty of negative press the game is receiving a huge amount of publicity online. We imagine the game to fly off the shelves this Christmas encouraging a younger female audience to play more board games despite an unfair advantage over their male peers.
